Chapter Nine
The train from Zurich to Cologne was ready to depart in 5 minutes according to the scheduled timetable. In fact this was no surprise inasmuch as practically all trains from Zurich are on time. Mostly tourists and business men occupied the carriages and there was not one child in sight. This too was no surprise since July was the busiest of the academic year. No doubt they were all busy being shaped into citizens of tomorrow. The railroad station at Zurich would by any measure be one of the busiest transit stations in Europe and the passage of human freight mostly proceeds unnoticed except by the handful of uniformed porters endlessly lifting and lugging baggage supplementing their wages with the added Francs. There is consequently no loitering, and very few smiles. Escalators moved up or down on their endless track carrying their equally endless stream of travellers. Two men stepped off and hurriedly made their way to the platform. As they passed through the gate, the taller one of the two led the way and was followed without protest by his companion.
